Perform system health checks

System health checks assess the overall condition of a storage system by verifying various components and operations, such as environmental status, software locks, and memory integrity.

About this task

Some of the following tests that the health check performs are storage system-specific and may appear in a different order or not at all.

  • Emulations Test—Verifies that all directors are loaded with the same Enginuity release as the release on the service processor.
  • Guest Test—Verifies Guest.
  • Environmentals Test—Verifies that internal environmental components (power supplies, fans, batteries, Fabric Attached Module (FAM) status and so on) are reporting no errors.
  • Locks Test—Verifies that there are no software locks present.
  • MMCS Test—Verifies operation of MMCS.
  • Backend Test—Verifies operation of the backend.
  • Battery Test—Verifies that the most-recent battery test reported no errors.
  • Spare Drives Test—Verifies that spare drives are available if there is a drive failure.
    NOTE: In Unisphere release 9.2.1 where a spare drive has been invoked, Unisphere provides an additional message in the Health Check dialog if the Spare Drives Test fails. The message states that the storage system is almost out of spare drives and that support plans to contact you.
  • General Test—Checks for any abnormal conditions in the following areas: Volume status, director status, stalled upgrade, code table integrity, directors running the same code.
  • Compression And Dedup Test—Verifies that the most-recent data deduplication test reported no errors.
    NOTE: The Compression and Dedup Test (for storage systems that support the test) is available after an initial health check is run.
  • Vault State Test—Verifies the ability of the system to save data when there is a power failure.
  • Memory Test—Verifies that the memory is reporting no errors or disabled banks.
  • DARE Test—Verifies that the most-recent DARE test reported no errors.
    NOTE: If DARE is enabled and configured, the DARE Test (for storage systems that support the test) is available after an initial health check is run.
  • Slics Test—Verifies operation of the SLICs.

To perform a health check on a storage system:

Steps

  1. Select a storage system.
  2. In the Dashboard, click the System Health tab.
  3. In the Actions panel, click Run Health Check.
    The Health Check view opens displaying results of previously run health checks, if any.
  4. Click Run Now or Add to Job List.
  5. Determine the health of the storage system by examining the Status and Results fields. When the Health Check Report contains failed health check tests or if the health check failed to run, the Health Check Failure, please rerun Health Check message is displayed.
